Have You Sat Down to Talk
to Mom and Dad Lately? While they are often delicate subjects to tackle, the best time to have a frank discussion with aging parents about retirement living options, lifestyle security, implementation of wills and trusts, legal and financial issues, and funeral and burial options is long before you need the information. Unfortunately, many people learn this too late. So, consider taking the time now to talk to your mom and dad. This will allow you to rest assured that whatever situation arises in the future, you know your loved one’s desires are being met. This process does not have to be formal and complicated. It can simply be a family meeting that stresses your desire to ensure all their wishes are implemented in a situation when they may not be able to speak for themselves. You will want to address questions such as: Are all of your important legal, financial and insurance documents in a safe and secure place where at least one trusted person has access to them? Have you legally appointed someone you trust to represent you regarding personal, financial and healthcare decisions if you cannot make these decisions yourself? Do you have financial records like bank accounts, loans, CD’s and stock certificates organized and in one place? Do you have a legal will? Have you taken legal action to protect your assets if you die? What are your preferences if you are faced with a situation where you are no longer able to care for yourself? Many older adults are guarded when discussing these types of issues, especially those pertaining to finances. You may be able to dispel their fears or concerns by seeking counsel from an objective third party, your Elder Care Specialist, that will re-emphasizing that your interest in those matters stems from your desire to ensure your loved ones receive the care they need and want at the necessary time. St. Andrew’s At-Home Services also publishes the Caregiver’s Quick Source Guide that serves as a workbook that outlines important questions to ask and provides you with the tools to keep track of critical information. For additional information regarding how your Elder Care Specialist can assist with this process, please contact Heather O’Brien, MSW, at 314-802-5106 or hobrien@standrews1.com. |
